Kara: walks out of her readyroom, tapping the back of her PADD against her knuckle, she looks around before settling her eyes on Sorek “How are we faring, Mr Sorek?”
Sorek: rises from the central chair and nods to Kara. “I believe the Humans’ phrasing would be ‘steady as she goes’, Commander. All departments have reported to work within optimal parameters.”
Kara: Good to hear. The crew changes haven’t been too disruptive?
Sorek: "As far as I have been informed by department heads, they have not. Though new engineers seem to believe they will find more Andromeda-class alike systems. Other than this peculiarity, crew rotations have had minimal discrepancies between expectations and deliverables.
Sorek: “Commander, I am curious… Headquarters were not very clear on our current heading or mission.”
Kara: Good good, can you assemble the senior staff in the briefing room? We have our orders now.
Kara: gives a small smirk, “Just ahead of you there.”
Sorek: “I see.”, he nods and taps his commbadge.
Sorek: activates his combadge.
Minah: meanders her way onto the bridge, aiming for on eof the vacant consoles in back and steals it for her own purposes.
Sorek: “Senior staff, this is Executive Officer Sorek. Please report to the bridge at Commanding Officer’s request.”
Sorek: “Mister Atar, you have the bridge.”
Hydra: "My apologies for being late. Things are busy in Engineering.
Kara: I can understand. How are you finding the ship
Hydra: sits in a chair.
Hydra: “I’ve already had a look over its schematics before my assignment - and it lives up to my expectations.”
Sorek: “If you have any improvement proposal, do not hesitate to share them.”, he nods to Hydra approvingly.
Kara: nods in agreement.
Hydra: “I’ll make a list of my proposals and have them sent to your office; you wouldn’t have read my thesis paper, would you?”
Sorek: “I am afraid not yet, Lieutenant. If you consider it vital to understanding these proposal, I will make it my priority.”
Hydra: “It concerns hollistic life support systems; while it still needs practical testing, I could drastically reduce power draw for life support while increasing redundancy.”
Hydra: “I’ll need to finish my schematics for THIS ship class, but I could have that finished within the week.”
Kara: I can see why that would be a benefit.
Sorek: “Given how often life support is minimised for rerouting powers to defensive capabilities, it sounds as a promising improvement. By saying THIS ship, I assume you were able to devise a more general framework?”
Hydra: “Yes - my system is node-based, distributing life support systems evenly throughout the ship with interconnected, but secondary, connections routed through the Jeffries tubes.”
Minah: walks into the ‘Back Room’ "My apologies for my tradiness, Commander Arashi expresses their regrets in not being here and has sent me in their stead.
Hydra: “…We can discuss my work later.”
Sorek: “Sounds almost like decentralisation through nodes on a Borg vessel.”, he comments and nods, then turns to the doctor. “Doctor T’Minah, welcome.”
Hydra: "Are we expecting anyobe else? I hear there’s some… incident of some kind regarding our other Humanoid officers - an illness, or oversleeping, or something of that category.
Kara: Yes, welcome Doctor. I appreciate everyone will still be settling in, but we will make do.
Sorek: turns his attention to Kara, offering upward Vulcan brow frown.
Hydra: idly adjusts her combadge
Kara: Alright, our first assignment will be a fairly familiar one, a ‘simple’ patrol along the Federation border.
Hydra: "Simple, sir?
Sorek: "Simple and Starfleet never correlate.
Kara: Well, we’re not off to deal with the end of all life in the galaxy as we know it - we’re not the Enterprise, Defiant or the Crypteia
Kara: Simple is relative.
Kara: gives a small grin.
Minah: "Along which border?
Kara: The Klingon Empire and Romulan Republic. The good old triangle.
Sorek: "From Azure Nebula to direction on Qonos?
Hydra: "And a one-way patrol, I assume - not an indefinite posting?
Kara: More or less. We might even see one of those fancy Alliance cruisers.
Kara: Patrols like this tend not to last too long, plus it’s largely a peaceful zone these days. We’ll be in more of an anti-piracy role than anything I suspect
Sorek: leans back in his chair. “I will admit that Khitomer and Temer are quite potent, but I would very much appreciate a dedicated science vessel by Alliance.”
Hydra: “Seems like I’ll need to get our long-range sensors up to spec, then.”
Hydra: “Will you be needing the doctor and I at the bridge for this assignment?”
Kara: It might be useful to see how we all work together. We’ll probably be spending a few weeks in fairly close quarters anyway.
Sorek: “And it is an opportunity to build senior staff cohesivness.”
Minah: "Very well then.
Hydra: “There’s still some final maintenance I need to conduct in Engineering, as well as some… finishing touches on my quarters, but after that I’ll be available for the next 36 hours.”
Kara: nods.
Kara: Oh, one final thing, there is an alert that we will need to be on the lookout for
Sorek: "Alert?!
Kara: There’s a large and unregistered Klingon vessel that has been sighted on long range subspace telescopes
Hydra: "Last known position and heading?
Kara: It’s been sighted along the border, with inconsistent timing
Sorek: "Comparable to any known vessels?
Kara: The closest fleet design we know of is the Negh’Tev, but it’s quite a bit larger than that, mainly in length.
Hydra: "I’ll make a request for known specifications and sensor logs; I might be able to make conjecture on its layout and capabilities.
Kara: It’s unlikely to be a pirate vessel given its size, but one thing we know, it’s not KDF.
Kara: I’ll have them forwarded to you.
Hydra: "Aye, sir.
Minah: “From which government does this alert come from?”
Sorek: “Negh’tev but more elongated.”, he says, tapping his chin.
Kara: Unusually, the Klingons themselves, although I suspect it’s a deliberate move from the new Chancellor
Sorek: "Hmm. Could point to one of renegade houses which adopted deviated designs.
Kara: Following the Klingon Civil War, there’s still some resentment towards the new Chancellor and her Torchbearer, and this might be a problem that would be messy for her to directly intervene in
Hydra: “…The Negh’tev IS a rather large model - upsizing it isn’t exactly a field modification. You would need a shipyard for that.”
Kara: The orders from Starfleet are to be on the lookout, but we’re not hunting it down.
Kara: If we do encounter it, we collect scans as safely as we can, but we don’t engage.
Kara: Alright, are there any questions
Sorek: elbows himself against the table, knitting his fingers together. “I will propose additional security drills.”
Hydra: gently shakes her head.
Minah: “I have none.”
Sorek: “Then I suggest we return to our duties.”
Hydra: "If that’ll be all, I’ll finish settling my root in auxiliary biohazard containment.
Sorek: "Settling your root, Liuetenant?!
Minah: glances at hydra at the mention of a biohazard
Hydra: “Indeed. I am a nymphid. While not accurate, you can picture me as a… plant-person.”
Hydra: "My root is where I spend time regenerating, accumulating memories, and intaking nutritional slurry.
Minah: "And your quarters havn’t been adapted to your requirements?
Sorek: “My apologies, Lieutenant.”, he nods gently. “But one rarely meets a plantoid… or a nymphid, as you say.”
Hydra: “Said nutritional slurry is… unpleasant to humanoids, and must be regularly maintained and revitalized. Moving my quarters there prevents any leakage or cross-contamination.”
Hydra: “Besides, modern storage protocols makes biohazard containment largely unused.”
Sorek: “It is logical why your thesis was in life support systems.”
Minah: “Even so, utilizing one of my biohazard containments as a your quarters goes against set rules. I can work with your engineers to adapt one of the ship’s quarters to what you require.”
Hydra: “…We are talking about Auxiliary Biohazard Containment next to Cargo Bay 2, right? I thought that was under Engineering’s… domain.”
Sorek: looks to Kara. "Perhaps my earlier comment on crew’s smoothness was premature.
Minah: "It matters not which department
Hydra: "…Understood. I did approach the captain beforehand, but it was my mistake not to approach you as well.
Minah: "It matters not which department ’lay’s claim’ to it, my concern is a member of this crew, one whose health I am task to oversee, will be reside in ‘Biohazard containment’.
Hydra: “Around now, it is in its late rooting stage, and separation should be relatively painless.”
Minah: "Relatively? So it would cuase pain?
Kara: looks between the two and nods to Sorek “I was under the impression the containment was for maintaining your ‘slurry’, not to act as your quarters indeed.”
Hydra: “Perhaps I was unclear - I was hoping to centralize it to avoid carrying unpleasant chemicals from place to place.”
Hydra: “…Though, with a few replicator adjustments, I could centralize both in my quarters.”
Minah: “You said separation would be relatively painless, which means there would still be pain, yes? Then at this point it is too late. I will need to repurpose another space for biohazard containment should it be required.”
Kara: looks to T’Minah then back to Hydra. "We don’t mean to make your uncomfortable, Lieutenant, and certainly wouldn’t want to cause you pain.
Hydra: "I meant “painless” as in “relatively easy” though the process WOULD involve some pain, yes."
Sorek: "Given your plantoid nature, is there any other cycle during which this can be done, with a purpose to further minimise your pain?
Hydra: “Doing it as soon as possible would be preferable. In fact, I was going to begin the process now, unless one of you wishes to supervise.”
Hydra: “I must clarify that I am NOT a humanoid - we do not share the same emotions, stimulus responses, or moral expectations. I am more than willing to accept pain and injury for the sake of convenience and efficiency.”
Sorek: looks between T’Minah and Hydra. “This may sound illogical, Doctor, Lieutenant, but what if would convert one of the smaller hydroponics bays for Lieutenant’s… purposes?”
Hydra: “That would be unnecessary. Hydroponics bay F is still several times larger than my minimum required space.”
Minah: “I will speak with Commander Arashi. We want to avoid causing pain to a member of the crew. We could do a last minute re-arrangment of the ship’s internal layout.”
Sorek: “I will reassign some of the Science Department, particularly those who are experts in Xeno-biology and horticulture to assist you if required.”
Hydra: “Thank you, sir.”
Minah: "Coincidently, most of my years of study and practice is xeno-biology. I am also available for your needs.
Hydra: "…And I must insist, T’Minah, that we have different definitions of pain. Mine is a stimulus response to separation, and could equally be categorized as “loneliness” or “failure.”"
Minah: “I see. Perhaps we can discuss this in a more appropriate seeting, in more depth so that we can best meet your requirements.”
Hydra: “Indeed - I can prepare my root for transplant, and in that time we can discuss my biological needs and expectations.”
Hydra: “Who knows? Perhaps you might be able to modify my slurry to be odorless and non-toxic, and I could comfortably rest my root in some utility closet.”
Minah: “Given time for stuidy, I can improve it for you.”
Hydra: “Indeed. If you don’t mind, I’ll begin transplant immediately; I’ll be in Engineering.”
Sorek: looks to Kara after Hydra’s inquiry
Kara: Lieutenant, through all this you haven’t actually mentioned your quarters
Kara: Are your quarters unsuitable as they are
Kara: I wouldn’t want to think one of my crew is living in a “utility closet” any more than a “biohazard container”.
Hydra: "I only require anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours of rest every 48 hours. Rest and relaxation are foreign concepts to me.
Hydra: “I need a comfortable bedroom as much as you need a comfortable bathroom.”
Kara: blinks slightly wondering if Hydra understood that a comfortable bathroom is also preferable. "I can appreciate the sentiment, but your quarters are as much important for you to have a personal..
Kara: …space, perhaps more so than a comfortable space."
Hydra: “…Individuality is also somewhat of a foreign concept, but I will not reject the extra space. I will find some use for it.”
Hydra: is still not entirely certain what a bathroom is for, and imagines it as some closet with a toilet and a sink
Kara: is satisfied, though perhaps not entirely happy with the compromise. “And for the record, I would love a comfortable bathroom.”
Hydra: “…If that is everything, sir, my root is expected to release its stored slurry in the next half hour, and I’d like to begin transplant before it makes a mess.”
Kara: smiles and nods “By all means. Thank you.”
Hydra: nods, and moves at a slightly faster-than-usual pace out of the briefing room
Minah: “If I am not needed, I will return to medbay.”
Kara: Of course, Doctor
Sorek: “Very well, Doctor.”
Minah: “I will have the medical department’s readiness reports sent to you within the hour sir.” She nodded to Sorek.
Sorek: “Understood, Doctor. I will review them and consult the Science Department on this rather… individual case, that has presented to us.”
Minah: “I will conferr with Doctor Arashi as well. Good day.” She moves to depart the room.
Sorek: “Good day to you as well, Doctor.”
Kara: exhales slightly as everyone else leaves. “Well that was interesting.”
Sorek: stands up. “Challenging. I find myself confounded I overlooked such an important fact. I apologise, Commander.”
Kara: smiles “And I shouldn’t have assumed either. It’s a funny thing, new crew members.”
Sorek: “Particularly non humanoids.”
Kara: chews at her inner-cheek “You’re right. And now we know.”
Sorek: “I shall conduct some reading on this after shift. Shall continue the conn, Commander?”
