U.S.S. Discovery
Nova class (Rhode Island refit), Light Science Vessel
Starship Registry NCC-74802
The USS Discovery (NCC-74802) was a Federation Nova-class starship operated by Starfleet. Constructed late into the original Nova-class lifecycle, the Discovery was one of the final vessels constructed of the block one line and thus was constructed with only iterative upgrades. Over her 40 year service, she received several major systems upgrades before finally receiving a full retrofit in 2412, essentially uprating her to the Rhode Island-class specification.

History
Originally constructed in 2377, the Discovery was launched as an original line Nova-class short range scout vessel. Assigned to Captain Meridia Tihz, and slated to join the Eridan Belt exploration initiatives, the Discovery began service with little fanfare.
Starfleet Life Sciences Experimental Service
The Discovery received an extensive retrofit in 2412 which saw extensive changes throughout the vessel, replacing the secondary deflector with a smaller but significantly more efficient graviton polarity generator, affording a comparable level of output performance in scientific and reconnaissance applications as the primary deflector. Power generation systems were also improved, with expanded fusion reactors and an upgraded warp core rated to take Discovery from 1000+ Cochrane of Warp Displacement to 1575+, allowing efficient travel at speeds close to Warp 9.1, up from Warp 8. The upgraded power systems led into further upgraded shielding and phaser output systems, taking care of some shortcomings discovered during the Klingon War.
The largest change of this refit was the reduction in crew complement from 85 to just 20, with the majority of engineering, security and medical staff provided by holographic crew members and exocomp crew members as part of an extended study by Starfleet, investigating the feasibility of limited code and function holograms to carry out dangerous duties without violating laws on Photonic and Artificial Sentience. This allowed many more laboratories to be installed in the place of former crew quarters, and a greater proportion of the crew dedicated to scientific study. While the study was hailed as a technical success, many crew members felt unease due to the abject lack of personality or basic emotion emulation in their holographic crewmates.
Long Duration Exploration
In 2421, Discovery was reassigned to the Starfleet 5th Fleet and underwent a refit at Starbase 514. This refit removed many of the holographic systems, and created additional crew habitation areas to support a larger crew once more. Advances in systems automation, and successes in trials with the Exocomp crew members meant that the new crew complement was now rated at 50 persons.

Command and Control Systems
The computer systems aboard the Rhode Island-class were based on isolinear circuitry, with additional bio-neural gel packs positioned throughout the vessel. The ship employed a single computer core. Operational control of the ship was provided by the main bridge, located on Deck 1. While Rhode Island-class ships weren’t capable of saucer separation, the bridge module (and most of Deck 1) could be ejected as part of an abandon ship protocol, capable of linking with other escape pods and forming a large network capable of surviving longer than a lone escape pod would.

Physical Arrangement & Crew Support
Measuring at over 180 meters long and with 8 decks, the design of the Nova-class consisted of two hull sections; an oval shaped primary hull and a cylindrical secondary hull which mounted two warp nacelles.
While the Rhode Island class starships typically held a crew complement of 85, following a refit in 2421, Discovery's standard crew complement was listed as 50. In an emergency situation, the Rhode Island-class was rated to carry up to 200 passengers for a limited duration.
While the refit Discovery was rated as a long range explorer-type, accommodations for civilian families were non-existent. Any civilians onboard the ship were typically limited to short term scientific and facilities contractors. A small range of typical amenities were available to the ship’s crew, including a number of holosuites and recreational facilities. Discovery possessed a single sickbay with three biobeds and a critical care bed. Originally designed to only act as an emergency recovery facility to transport critically injured to either a starbase or larger vessel for medical treatment, the size available is limited. Due to recent lessons learned from a Starfleet study on photonic entities, resourceful Doctors can make use of a hologramatic programing interface, to generate equipment and support structures within sickbay to facilitate many treatment profiles. Medical staff can also interact with a holographic interface based on personality engrams of renowned Dominion War hero, Doctor Julian Bashir and an extensive library of “frontier medicine” knowledge.
Discovery also possesed a sizable array of science labs for its weight.

Propulsion and Power Generation
Discovery was equipped with a standard Class 12 matter/antimatter warp drive, of General Electric ADS/01 specification, with an average output of 1525 Cochrane. Her standard cruising velocity was Warp 6.5, with a maximum cruise of up to Warp 9.1. Discovery was rated for a top speed of Transwarp 12 for a period of up to 1 hour. Sublight propulsion was achieved primarily through the use of the vessel’s large impulse engine, located on the aft edge of the primary hull. Fine maneuvering control was provided by four large RCS Thruster quads, located on the trailing edges of the primary hull and the far aft of the warp nacelle housings.
While the warp core serves as the primary source of power for all ship systems, often supplanted by the vessel’s conventional deuterium fusion and impulse reactors, it was not the only method of propulsion available. The Discovery was also equipped with a Yoyodyne Q-1T Quantum Slipstream Drive System, allowing the vessel to reach speeds as high as Transwarp 30 for a limited time, however such travel placed immense stresses on the hull, so it is typically only used in emergencies.
Tactical and Defensive Systems
Equipped with only a standard payload of 11 type XII phaser arrays and 2 torpedo launchers, along with a resilient shielding array system, the Discovery provides a capable albeit limited defensive response. By herself, she can employ hit and run tactics, counting more on her small profile and maneuverability than her defensive systems to withstand an extended engagement. As part of a fleet movement, however, Discovery can provide vital support, using her enhanced sensor arrays to provide tactical data on hostile fleet compositions and pinpoint exploitable weaknesses in hostile forces.
Auxiliary Spacecraft
The Discovery was equipped with a single shuttlebay, located along the aft engineering hull of the vessel. In addition, a service bay above the shuttlebay shuttlebay was able accommodate several Workbee-type vessels.
Discovery carried two Type 7 shuttlecraft, two Type 8 shuttlecraft and two “Workbee” pods as her standard complement of small craft, her shuttlebay was capable of holding an additional craft up to the size of a Runabout, however this limited her overall utility and would only be intended for short term visitors or specific mission profiles.
