The SANEK Array is finally operational, though bringing it online was far more taxing than simply assembling transceiver masts and solar arms.
Before we could even begin the commissioning, our visitors from the Breen Confederacy proved to be a source of friction. Unsurprisingly, Captain Pren felt no shame in intercepting our unencrypted comms with the Tykera, claiming if we wanted privacy, we should have secured the channel. A classic Breen response - silent, calculated, and sharp.
The activation itself nearly ended in disaster. During the required baryon sanitization sweep, a foolish civilian vessel wandered into the exclusion zone. Fortunately, Captain Tohi acted with typical Klingon precision, snatching them away with her Kos’Bovt's tractor beam before they were vaporized.
Worse yet, an improperly deactivated Denobulan experiment began leaking high-energy particles at the tips of the solar panel arms. Had the baryon field intersected those concentrations, the resulting discharge would have destroyed the array’s control circuitry or triggered a chain reaction. My science team analyzed the dynamics, and I proposed a risk: using the Breen vessel’s modified cryogenic beams to cool and passivate the escaping particles. Pren executed the precision strike flawlessly, freezing the hatches and allowing the sweep to pass safely. I must admit, the silent Breen came through when it counted, even if it cost me a moment of dread that I might end up in Ko’th - the Place Between Places. (A/N: Ko’th first appears in the Deep Space 9 Millenium novel “Inferno” and was used in STO mission “Leap of Faith”. Gowron is saved from there.)
However, the true revelation came after the array powered up. When we beamed aboard for the official ceremony, we were met by Ambassador Odan, a Trill diplomat who has been missing for fifty years. Pren’s sensors immediately picked up massive psionic emissions pulsing through the array. Odan admitted that Breen neural technology was specifically integrated into SANEK so the Alliance could communicate beyond normal physical space.
Between the Chimeran threat, secondary shadow power networks, and psionic emissions tied to Trill symbionts, this beacon at the edge of the Empire has become far more complex than a simple communications/exploration hub. I offered bloodwine to celebrate our survival, but I suspect we will need something much stronger for what comes next.
