NARRATIVE:
This report details the investigation and escort of 5 freighters to Deep Space Nine by the USS William B. Travis and the USS Bunker Hill
On Stardate 103591 the USS William B. Travis was en route to the Trill sector near the Minos Korvas on a routine patrol when Trill Sector Command routed a request from the SS Best o’Luck to be escorted to Deep Space Nine. Later Trill Sector Command would confirm that they received the request for only a singular ship. Upon arrival to the coordinates the William B. Travis was initially alone near an asteroid field. After waiting fifteen minutes five freighter beacons lit up on sensors and made themselves known to the Travis. The Travis opened communications with the lead ship, the Best o’Luck, and was very lightly briefed on the situation. Captain Sherry-Anne Doss explained that the small convoy needed an escort to Deep Space Nine. Per Trill Sector Command all 5 ships were scheduled and were on course to arrive at Deep Space Nine, to assist with the additional ships Trill Sector Command informed us that they were deploying another ship to rendezvous with us . None of the freighter Captains would give us any definitive information on why we were requested to escort them to DS9. A voluntary cargo scan revealed nothing out of the ordinary. The freighter Captains were all on edge and eager to get moving. I suggested we start at warp 6 but Captain Doss insisted we leave the vicinity at the maximum warp that the slowest freighter was able to move at (8.1). As we were prepping to make the jump to warp the USS Bunker Hill opened a channel and informed us that they were on their way to assist with the escort, after two hours at warp 8.1 the Bunker Hill arrived and we moved in a line formation covered on the flanks by both our ship and the Bunker Hill.
We arrived at Deep Space Nine at 0300 local time. When speaking with the freighter captains they once again refused to give us any relevant information as to why they requested a Starfleet escort to Deep Space Nine. When speaking with the Captains I did however notice that none of them would make eye contact with me and that they forbid any of their crew to speak with me or Captain Daniels (USS Bunker Hill) crew. Captain Doss thanked us for the escort and returned to normal operations.
I’m not sure what happened out there, but it clearly has the freighter captains spooked enough to keep to themselves. Per Commodore Terrak’s suggestion on DS9 I will offer a Starfleet wellness check to see if there is anything causing this kind of behavior.
