Brief History
Kallatar are one of those Klingon families which were wealthy enough and battle-ready enough to rise above the commoners, but not sufficiently enough to become a House in its own right. Though they colloquially referred to themselves as “a minor House”, such claim was not generally accepted among the Klingons in general.
The family line was established as early as Earth’s 21st century, shortly after the First Contact between Klingons and Vulcans in H’atoria. Kallatar had been an engineer aboard the bird of prey that destroyed the Vulcan ship. Understanding that Vulcan were dedicated to science and research, activities which were unusually favoured by his ancestors, Kallatar challenged his commanding officer, a member of House Duras, during the next encounter with Vulcans. Although he killed his commanding officer, he suffered the same fate mere minutes later at the hand of second in command. House Duras had Kallatar’s family and relatives exiled to Qu’vat.
Kallatar’s son, Konar, took on his father’s name as he began to chronicle family’s history. As a family, Kallatar have emerged at the forefront of Klingon scientific history when the Klingon Empire acquired cloaking technology from Romulans, some time prior to The Enterprise Incident. Kvin, grandson of Konar’s 1st cousin Jokal, was among the scientists tasked to make this technology mass-produced. This had acquired Kallatar family just enough prestige in the Klingon High Council, who awarded them lands in one of the newest colonies in Ghomha system. Establishing merchant and supply lines early on, Kallantar were able to absorb smaller families and individual colonists into their fold. This gave them, for the first time in their chronicled history, access to larger military vessels.
Family of Scientists
Several members distinguished themselves in the military service, but majority had remained colonial administators, scientists, engineers and merchants. Norq, son of Kvin, was among the few scientists to warn of the dangers of Praxis’ over-mining. Upon signing of Khitomer Accords, Norq was the first Kallantar, and one of the first Klingons, to visit Vulcan Science Academy, thus fulfilling his ancestor’s dream. Another notable member was Rakar, who served as engineer aboard bird of prey Ki’tang in Dominion War. Although scientific exchange between the Empire and the United Federation of Planets increased over the years, Klingons were rarely interested in pure research and more in the perfection of their weapons, shields and cloaking devices.
It wasn’t until the founding of Dyson Joint Command that the Kallantar family attempted to really rise to greater prominence. Although the Gorn provided majority of science and exploration dedicated vessels, Morak, son of J’vek, insisted on construction of purely Klingon science vessel. When the first line of so-called “science destroyers” was announced by Dyson Joint Command, Morak took his son Thorgar to Solanae Dyson Sphere to work on the project alongside Federation and Romulan Republic engineers. Even the Human name - science destroyers - captured amalgam of Morak’s passion - science, and most notable trait of Klingon culture - conquest.
These vessels were designed as a proof of concept for two reasons:
- that the technological cross-talk between three interstellar polities was easier than originally considered,
- Solanae technology could be utilised without the need of Omega molecules as energy supply.
However, with the emergence of Vadwuar threat and subsequent Iconian War, only a handful of these vessels were constructed and those unfinished were salvaged in favour of well-established designs.
All except for one.
Kl’Vok class
It remains unknown whether Morak was able to procure a sufficiently functional Nov-class vessel to Ghomha system and finish it there or was the vessel built on-site, but by the end of Hurq crisis, Morak and Thorgar were able to partially complete their custom-built vessel dedicated to science and exploration, backed by their long-standing merchant partners and supervised by K’Men and Galera from Klingon Intelligence Service.
Compared to the original Nov, this vessel was stripped off more “exotic” features such as proton heavy cannon armaments, proton matrix shielding, inversion projector and subspace folding capabilities. It retained the advanced deflector systems and sensor systems, cloaking device and it was equipped with various laboratory facilities that could match Starfleet’s Pathfinder and Vesta family of ship classes.
When The Shattering of Klingon Empire began, Morak hid the vessel in fear that its advanced technologies would be used to support J’mpok’s mycelial war machine. With the help of several supportive fellow scientists from across the Khitomer Alliance, Morak sent off the vessel and majority of non-combatant members and individuals loyal to Kallantar (led by young Thorgar) to the Alpha Quadrant.
Morak and his remaining, combat-ready people deployed Kallantar’s four vessels, three B’rel birds of prey and one Vorcha cruiser, and made their final stand as Aakar’s strike force came to claim the vessel and Kallantar’s estate for their own.
The Decline
Although Aakar and J’mpok were defeated mere two weeks later in the Battle of Qo’nos, Kallantar estates were split between the various factions which allied with Martok and J’Ula. Family was never officially exiled or stripped of their honour by the Klingon High Council, but Thorgar’s regular claims and protests had fallen on deaf ears as Chancellor L’Rell was preoccupied with consolidating her power among her allies and former enemies within the Klingon Empire.
During the C’Qer Crisis, Thorgar and the remaining members of Kallantar family and their associates took refuge with Lukari Concordium, serving as “external scientific collaborators” on several projects for the Concordium and Khitomer Alliance.
With Morak’s construct barely half finished, his son Thorgar now seeks to complete his father’s work, hoping to restore at least some of family’s reputation.
