U.S.S. Yorktown

Intrepid Class Cruiser, NCC-255
The U.S.S. Yorktown (NCC-255), originally built as Yorktown (NV-25), was a United Federation of Planets, originally United Earth Starfleet, starship that began construction in 2146 and launched in 2148. She was among the early types of ships constructed in larger numbers as Starfleet began to come into its own.

History

A joint project between the United Space Probe Agency and the Warp Five Complex, that worked mainly with United Earth Starfleet, the New Vessel, or Intrepid, class, was built using many NX project designs and parts in mind, though at a somewhat more limited scale. This gave workers experience they would need in the near future to build Naval eXperimental class vessels, which would have been quite the stretched leap without it. As well, if the NX project had hit a dead end or the Warp Five Complex failed deadline, the work put in could simply be used to build more vessels such as the NV class due to the similarities.

Yorktown was in the third wave of said NV class to be made, a dozen being ordered to start construction in 2145 after the successful flight of NX-Delta’s Warp 3, a dozen for 2146, and a dozen for 2147. Prior to this class, the majority of Earth vessels made earlier, such as freighters and the Ganges class, were capable of around Warp 2. Yorktown caught the end of 2146 for production due to being the first of the third dozen, and she was completed in two years, standard for the time. Warp 4 had been achieved mid construction, though that engine was not retroactively fitted. A year after Yorktown entered service under Captain Makawee Chumani, a former United Earth Navy officer, Enterprise NX-01 was under construction.

Capable of much higher speeds than earlier ships and similar to many of this time period, able to push past the ‘display sticker’ of the specifications speed to around Warp 3.5, Yorktown was tasked with light exploration in addition to the common patrol duties vessels of the time had. Most of this time was rather uneventful, as Earth’s space was limited and deeper space exploration was reserved for the NX to come, as its speed would dwarf even this engine. Common tasks were showing the flag to dispel pirates or delivering certain critical components needed faster than the Earth Cargo Service could manage. After the launch of Enterprise and the Warp 5 Engine success, this would change.

Warp 5 was an important threshold. Warp Factors derived based on a sawtooth-like increasing energy pattern where power usage to maintain the speed would increase, then drop off sharply before increasing again. For example, maintaining Warp 3.8 took more energy than Warp 3 or Warp 4, as both were in the ‘indents’ of the pattern. It was, therefor, economical for a ship to get over the power threshold spike and hit the next Warp Factor if possible. This is why, most often, ship cruising speeds are either a solid Warp Factor, or in the lower half of one, with unsustainable emergency speeds being in the upper half. For example, a ship with a cruising speed of Warp 4.5, even if it does cross the Warp 5 peak threshold, may have trouble maintaining that speed.

Due to these workings of Warp Science, Warp 5 is a goal because it was the first of these geometric indents that also happened to be over 100 times the speed of light. With NX class vessels on the table for future construction, but only one made for now, and the engine proven to work as of 2151, this left the production capacity of Warp 5 Engines naturally outpacing the one ship that would complete two years from now. Makawee was adamant about Yorktown receiving a Warp 5 Engine due to their importance, and so Yorktown would go into refit briefly during 2151, coming out early 2152. Several other NVs also received such engines, with the Gangnes class receiving Warp 3 Engines swapped out in such a way.

Yorktown also received other minor modifications while in spacedock at the Captain’s request, such as an armored grill over the deflector dish, paneling to protect the warp nacelle plasma exhausts and bussard ramscoop caps. With Starfleet’s fast expansion, the ship’s senior staff sans for its Captain, and some of its crew, were reassigned during its time in spacedock to fill out other positions in the fleet. Upon exiting with its new engine, Makawee had to gather a new senior staff and several crew members. Most of her decisions were for officers down on their luck.

The adventures of the ship proper began during this period, able to now routinely reach Warp 4.8 and often pass the threshold to Warp 5. The ship would meet several new species, such as the Gort, and would even gain a new member for their adventures most of the crew would bond with. Yorktown was also perhaps the first Starfleet ship to go near the Delphic Expanse, resulting in many notable ship logs, and, eventually, an intelligence transfer to Enterprise for its mission.

Yorktown would retreat closer to Earth during the Xindi crisis period and be given M.A.C.O.s, which would become a mainstay. The first commanding officer of Yorktown’s MACOs was Janet Crawford. A tentative period, most combat capable ships would not stray far from Earth. Eventually, during the climax of the interception and battle with ‘The Destroyer’ and its escorts, Yorktown would approach and hold off two Xindi attack ships in combat near Mars before Weapon Zero was destroyed.

Resuming patrol and exploration adventures, Yorktown would eventually participate in the Earth Romulan War, including being at the final battle of Cheron, the armor upgrades of the 2151 refit of great aid. Several small-scale upgrades would be passed along to ships such as Yorktown during the war, though rebuilds or refits were selective so as to not remove ships from postings for long. Post War, Yorktown would be granted another, more major, refit, that would begin in 2161 and finish in 2162, as the technology surge from alliance warranted as such. Shortly after, exploration resumed, Yorktown would disappear for around one week with no sensor logs to account for such. Suspected causes are a spatial anomaly or time travel.

Command and Control Systems

Used on ships at the time, Yorktown employs the Spacecraft Operating & Management System (S/COMS) operating system and its computers used classical electronic transistors. A single main computer core area was located in the center of the saucer on B, C and D decks. The large cylinder shaped device would typically have only one third of its total hardware engaged at any point to provide redundancy, though the secondary or tertiary thirds could be brought online for computation power needed for a strenuous task. This means that it functionally was similar to three computer cores sharing a three-story room. Which third was primary, secondary or tertiary was regularly rotated. This class features neither a Warp Core Ejection system or a Saucer Separation system, both regular for the era to lack.

Primary control of the vessel was possible without modification from the main bridge on A deck or from main engineering on E and F decks. Yorktown sports two Electronic Warfare Arrays roughly behind the bridge that can aid sensors via amplification of power or precision and help stop, cut through or cause interference of other sources to make sure control of the vessel stays within proper hands. Notable in the case of the Earth Romulan War, these arrays and frequent upgrades to them helped bolster resistance against Romulan Arrenhe’hwiua technology attempts. These attacks, already difficult to use against Earth vessels, and interwar developments, such as updated Gatekeeper protective memory buffers, made Romulan ‘Telecapture’ hacking technology of the era obsolete. A brig with two cells is located on F deck.

External Control Systems

Yorktown sports two single Grappler Arm systems. One arm is located on the back of the saucer section between each of the two sets of Launch Bay and Cargo Bay doors. Each arm would lower to clear the saucer section edge before firing, using a magnetic acceleration tube to propel the attachment ends away from the launcher at high speed. Each Grappler has around 8 Kilometers worth of woven carbon nano-tube tritanium metal alloy composite, using a Multi-Walled (MWNT) arrangement, With a diameter of around 1 meter, each Grappling cable can withstand around 600,000 metric tons force tension, though the strength of the clamp matters more. These were common systems on ships of the era to manipulate external objects or tow other vessels as needed. Grapplers typically used magnetism by running current through the cable to the clamp to establish a maglock with an object, though later versions were also capable of emitting gravitons generated on an apparatus on the clamp, similar to the concept of deck plating, allowing non-magnetic objects to be clamped onto.

Near the end of the Earth Romulan war, Tractor Beam technology began to become available due to both Earth advancements in the science of control of Gravitons and Coalition intel sharing. Yorktown post war sports a single Tractor Beam, located on the bottom of G deck behind the Planetary Sensor Dome but in front of the Aft Landing Strut. This tractor Beam unit is made to Vulcan specifications. Unlike the Grappler systems, the Tractor Beam is capable of moving objects in any direction or simply suspending them, and has the added benefit of being less likely to cause damage to objects being handled, as the Gravitons sent by the beam to the object can be spread out, lessoning sheering forces. The Tractor Beam can manipulate objects around other objects as well, so long as even a modicum of line-of-sight between it and the object is possible.

Physical Arrangement & Crew Support

While typical later, such as on the NX refit and onwards, but rare for the era, Yorktown and the Intrepid class in general sported both a primary saucer section and a small, almost proto secondary hull engineering section. Layout-wise, Yorktown has twin Warp Nacelles attached to the secondary hull via struts that angle up, with the Nacelles overlapping with the saucer section, resting against it at a contact point above the main cargo areas. This gives Yorktown a small Warp profile and was thought that it might increase speed while at Warp. As a side effect, it does offer additional support for the Warp Nacelles, though the speed argument is questionable, as the NX class can reach higher speeds with less work. Yorktown’s Warp Field Governor sits atop the secondary hull similar to a refit NX class.

The outward facing sides of these Nacelles sport fins, which both serve as a heatsink to keep excess heat away from the hull contact point, which was a problem previously, and also provide lift and control in atmosphere, similar to the Shuttlepod’s extending wings feature. Yorktown’s Warp Nacelles feature armoring over much of the warp coils and plasma exhaust areas on the sides and partial domes over the Bussard Ramscoops on the front.

Yorktown features a cutaway in the front of the saucer section to house the Navigational Deflector dish and equipment, which is immediately flanked on each side by one of the fore ‘Hawkeye’ sensor pallets. Yorktown’s Deflector dish is housed inside a protective transparent aluminum housing with hull grilling to allow the Polarized Hull Plating system to encompass it, somewhat protecting it during both atmospheric flight for the former and combat for the latter. While this adds durability to the system, it is still much less tough than the actual armored hull, though is the best one could expect without impeding its functions.

Yorktown’s saucer section is of very similar, but not identical, construction to the NX saucer section due to sharing designs and parts, though Yorktown has a key difference, like other Intrepid class ships, have a ‘half saucer’, as it stops roughly past the port and starboard airlocks to form right angles for the saucer edge Impulse Engines. This makes these ships have less overall mass than the NX class and somewhat simpler construction, though they also have less space for Laboratories and have smaller Cargo Bays in total volume, despite the Cargo Bays being 3 decks high. However, while less than an NX, in comparison to future vessels, even this ship class has an awe inspiring volume dedicated to cargo storage for its size due to being in a pre-Replicator era, it being necessary to carry somewhat over a year’s worth of any materials or tools one might need. Cargo and Launch Bay entrances, as well as dedicated Probe/Drone launch ports are on the back of the half-saucer edge on either side of the secondary hull, with one of each type per side.

Crew Transportation

The ship has three Turbolifts, one fore of the central saucer area near the Recreation Facilities, one just aft and off-center to port of it near the Bridge, and one near the fore of the secondary hull section ahead of Main Engineering. The ship has tubes of Quick Access Ladders that connect the decks, as well as tubes of Service Tunnels for equipment access (which would eventually be named Jefferies Tubes) that, when followed, eventually go the entire horizontal and vertical of the ship, though both of these tubes are rather modest in circumference.

The ship has a single organic capable (quantum level, as opposed to molecular level) transporter system on deck E, fore of the starboard Launch Bay and across the hallway from the Decontamination Chamber. As a 22nd century unit, it has no biofilter nor annular confinement beam, meaning it cannot filter out diseases or remove harmful happenstances or devices in transport. The unit can transport 6 people per transport cycle or cargo that can fit in the alcove. During 2162, it was discovered transporters had a chance to cause single bit errors during the rematerialization process that would accumulate with each transport. The issue would be fixed during this year with a new mark of transporter. All ships received this. Physiological damage from this process on victims it did occur to was irreversible until 2164, when Dr. Phlox made a breakthrough.

Transportation outside of the nebulous relationship with the Transporter is supplied by two OTV K42 Shuttlepods on standby in the Launch Bays, with two more stored in the Cargo Bays. While listed as Shuttlepod 1 and Shuttlepod 2 (and then 3 and 4 for the stored pods) they are informally referred to as Tarzan and Jane. The stored pods are often swapped out with the active ones to keep runtime more monotone across all units, with Shuttlepod 3 and Shuttlepod 4 having the informal names of Beauty and Beast.

If needing to go outside the ship or into a hazardous environment while using the other transportation methods, Environmental Suits were available. Originally sporting older style orange colored suits, after her 2152 refit, Yorktown now used the latest bronze colored suits. Senior crew members and security officers (and later MACO soldiers) had their own personnel suits, though other members of the crew had to share general suits of various sizes from storage lockers, though these could be resized by using the Maintenance and Fabrication Facilities if it was found a crew member could not wear them. The suits came in four pieces, all self sealing if damaged, the helmet and chest piece, the suit itself, gloves, and the boots. Five fingered gloves were the standard, though could be changed. These suits featured headlights, ambient face lights, an earphone communication system, an extra tubing for sharing oxygen, an emergency thruster pack, a belt to hold objects, and magnetic capable boots.

Crew Recreation

Holographic technology as sophisticated and encompassing as later Holodecks or Holosuites did not exist within Starfleet at this time, holograms being limited to Augmented Reality applications instead of full immersion, examples including projecting media like movies for viewing or creating objects in space for target practice. This was only possible in specific areas as well, mainly the Mess Hall, which doubled as a Movie Theater, or the Multipurpose room. Virtual Reality was also possible, though required worn gear such as glasses or a headset, and was often best enjoyed in Recreation facilities or private Quarters.

Keeping the crew entertained was taken quite seriously, Yorktown fully customizable Multipurpose room can have equipment set up to perform many tasks, such as a training room or target range, or for sports, such as Basketball or Tennis. This facility has the previously mentioned Augmented Reality capability, projectors in the ceiling are capable of creating ‘images’ of objects, such as a moving target board for aim practice or a scoreboard with numbers for sports. These objects, unlike later Holo-facilities, are entirely light, and have no form when touched, though controls for games set up in this way will respond to stimulus the same way firing a training weapon at the “target” will cause the target to react accordingly.

Yorktown also sports a modest Gymnasium bordering this room, containing several exercise equipment pieces such as treadmills and various weight machines. Equipment for this room is stored nearby for swapping if desired. Originally, Yorktown had two Gymnasiums, though unlike the logs of now Admiral Archer on his at the time Chief Engineer Charles Tucker III showing hesitance to install a pool, Captain Makawee, once on her state’s swim team, and former Navy Officer, was convincing enough to be able to have one installed in the place of the second Gymnasium.

As the deck is shared with the Water Storage tanks and the Waste Water Recycling systems are just above, a small part of a tank was sectioned off so as to be able to quickly draw in and release the water from the pool. The resting state of the pool is empty, meaning visitors to the facility need to tell the pool to fill, which can be done from the holding tank once it has been refilled by the Waste Water Recycling systems. Additional security measures also included the pool bottom having two sets of Grav-Plating and the room angling so that water will flow towards it.

Off of this block of bordering rooms and a short journey closer into the ship is a Sauna room. Capable of holding several people, this room is able to be set to a wide range of temperatures for relaxation, not just heat, due to a ‘Cold Plunge’ feature, and capable of making steam for humidity options. Measurements of the room’s current settings are displayed both inside and on the outside wall. Inside are several timers and a clock to avoid overexposure. Closer to the center of the saucer and near the forward Turbolift are two Lounges, modest rooms containing library shelves and a large screen to watch movies on, with accompanying headphones optional to not disturb other visitors. These rooms sport comfortable furniture for these media activities such as couches, massage recliners and beanbags.

Adjacent to these smaller Lounges is the Main Recreation Room, which is larger and rather customizable. While this rectangular shaped room sports many of the same options as these smaller Lounges, such as bookshelves and a pair of large screens on opposing walls, it also has computer stations for working in a more social environment, or playing computer games. The key feature, however, is the room’s custom nature, with many pieces of furniture able to fold down out of wall storage and be moved away for use, such as tables and chairs for playing tabletop or card games or even pool/table tennis units.

Crew Quarters

Quarters for crew in this era were rather modest, though each room, even that of Enlisted crew, had its own personal bathroom, with a shower, sink and lavatory. Yorktown contains 28 single quarters and 34 quarters with bunk beds for two. Enlisted crew quarters were often the latter bed arrangement, featuring twin-sized beds, with modest size, though contained a work desk with computer and chair, and several areas for storing or setting belongings, including two person-height dedicated storage lockers. Officers quarters were often the former bed arrangement, featuring twin XL-sized beds, and were larger for more customizability of the living space, containing all of the Enlisted crew quarter features. The Captain’s quarters had all of the features of Officer quarters, but were even larger, and upgraded the bed to a Queen-size.

Crew quarters were located on D deck for lower ranking Officers and E deck for higher ranking Officers, typically on the edge of the saucer section and sometimes with a view of space through transparent aluminum armor ‘windows’. Enlisted quarters were on both D deck and E deck, though were closer to the ship center and often lacked windows. Guest quarters were similar to the Captain’s quarters, and, along with Guest aide quarters, which were similar to Enlisted quarters, with a single twin-sized bed non-bunk, were on G deck near the Planetary Sensor Array. These quarters, being for diplomatic use or VIPs, are not counted in normal quarter allotments, though can be given if needed.

All quarters can have their local gravity, temperature, humidity and atmospheric content altered lightly. Atmospheres resembling L and H types are possible, though will be relatively close to M type due to limitations. For more extreme conditions outside most Human comfort zones, the Decon Chambers can be used, as they have a wider range of these aspects for their tasks. Certain quarters can be connected to each other with little issue if both members are interested, though not all can due to arrangement design.

Crew Nourishment

Due to full Replicator technology not been developed yet, most crew only have limited amounts of food in their room and must leave to acquire food. Fruits and Vegetables are grown in the Hydroponics Bay on D deck and transported to the bordering starboard Cargo Bays (Second Level). Food about to be used can be lowered down via a lift to the E deck of the Cargo Bays (First level). A good portion of the starboard Cargo Bays are dedicated to not just the two standby Shuttlepods, but also food storage, and use ample refrigeration and freezing containers. These bays also contain a walk in freezer and refrigerator.

Directly next to these Cargo Bays (First Level) is the Galley, so that food can easily be transported from storage without entering the main corridors. The Galley has ample space and contains the Bulk Protein Storage Tank and Protein Resequencer equipment for making certain foods and drinks. The Galley’s equipment consists of four general ovens, two reconstituting ovens, two sinks, and five stoves, with two walk in refrigerators. Finished food can be kept in cubbies in a large storage compartment on the wall that will vacuum out the air, keeping it fresh until ready to be transported to the Mess Hall area down the corridor the exit aims directly at.

The Mess Hall is the main way the crew receive nourishment, although small amounts of prepared food are often left in the Main Recreation room for those enjoying their time there. On the starboard side of the ship and with an ample view of space, the Mess Hall is a social area, hence why it is often converted to a theater for movie nights or a sound stage for karaoke and has Augmented Reality projectors. Food first enters into a Serving and Scullery room attached to the Mess Hall through a separate entrance, with the Chef or Kitchen Assistant using carts to transport it there. Food can then be placed into Vacuum Storage on the wall like that of the Galley, connecting this area to the Mess Hall.

This storage is two-way cubbies, allowing those in the Mess Hall to enjoy a fresh meal that can be hot or cold due to the vacuum nature. Used plates and utensils can be put back onto these cubbies also, allowing them to be washed with the large dishwasher in the Serving and Scullery room, then placed back into the ample storage compartments in this room for eating tools. This room also contains a refrigerator and a sink for basic preparation and storage of simpler items. The Mess Hall itself on the other side of this two-way cubby wall contains multiple tables and chairs of different sizes for different group numbers. The Captain’s Mess borders this room to the opposite side.

On the wall of the Mess Hall is a Drink Dispenser, which is a device capable of tactile or voice activation that can make a number of beverages using a combination of the Water Storage Tanks and the nearby Protein Resequencer. Being liquid, it can be run like other ship-wide systems to this room via ceiling embedding. Menu items can be hot, warm or cold, and with or without ice, including; Water, Tea, Coffee, Cocoa, Milk, Cola and various Juices. Due to it using the Protein Resequencer, tweaks using known data could produce new items if done carefully, such as Vulcan Tea being possible.

Crew Care

Crew health was taken care of by Sickbay, located on E deck, directly in the middle of the saucer and a short walk from the center Turbolift. Rather identical in design to its NX counterpart, it features a sink on either side of the entrance, a pair of research stations on the immediate inside left, followed by the imaging chamber and three care beds flowing clockwise in the circular room, each having their own curtains and light control. Further clockwise is more research stations and an equipment storage alcove, then the doctor’s office, partitioned by a set of walls for privacy, and from this passage to the doctor’s office, a bathroom and an equipment storage room. The center of the room sports an examination table and a computer and supply station to accompany it. Just outside Sickbay and down the corridor on the port side is a Secondary Ward, followed by the Medical Research Lab, then the port side Decontamination Chamber.

If one goes outside Sickbay and to starboard, one will find the Morque, then the Transporter Alcove, followed by the starboard side Decontamination Chamber. Both Decon Chambers are attached to each side’s Launch Bay, allowing a returning Shuttlepod crew, and in the case of starboard, the Transporter Alcove returners, to enter with minimal exposure to open corridors. The Decon Chamber is a medical tool of the time period that is used to neutralize possibly harmful foreign materials. The use of both radiation and topical gels one would apply were used for the task. Decon Chambers are sealed once closed, even having their own internal gas recyclers which were rather flexible, along with other settings, in case of environmental treatment options. The ship sports a tailor, barber and laundry room on E deck.

Propulsion and Power Generation

Sporting a well-tuned and understood Warp 5 Engine, Yorktown is capable of speeds above the halfway point to Warp 6 in a pinch, though such speeds can only be maintained for a short time. While a powerful and surprisingly efficient design for its time, able to rather easily exceed its design targets, the Archer style engine does consume more deuterium than most competitors of its era, resulting in several of these early ships having noticeable saucer section contours that more or less function as large deuterium reservoirs.

On the Intrepid class such as Yorktown, a large amount of the rectangular foundation the bridge seems to sit atop is such a reservoir, notable for having two large double doors atop near the front. One part of these double doors, the outer set, is emergency airlock access, though the other, inner set, is a pair of water and deuterium fueling ports for filling these tanks at facilities.

While main power is provided by the matter-antimatter reaction of the Warp Core, ships of this era tended to have very robust nuclear fusion power facilities, and Yorktown is no exception. Sporting three stages of plasma accelerators, most ship functions can be entirely run off of Impulse Power, powering Electro-Plasma System Grid even with the Warp Core offline, though this comes with notably lower effectiveness. Notably, similar to the DY-500 class or the Phoenix as well-known examples, Yorktown is capable of entering Warp on fusion power, though the maximum speed of such an endeavor is only around Warp 1.5.

Another downside of this is, naturally, that such an overabundance of equipment takes up a lot of internal space, though with the two power systems working in tandem, the ship has more energy than one would expect. This excess power generation as a precaution is what allowed many Starfleet ships of this era to absorb power usage heavy upgrades such as Deflector Shielding from UFP member technology without much issue on that front.

Like many ships of the time, Yorktown has exceptional sublight maneuverability and speed comparable to designs even centuries later, being the period in which Impulse solidified. As well, like most Starfleet designs, Yorktown features Vernier Thrusters along key points of the saucer. An above average number of Reaction Control System clusters are used for excellent finesse control also, with Yorktown sporting eight, capable of maneuvering the vessel with only a few of the total. Earth always used ample backups.

Tactical and Defensive Systems

Offense

As was standard before 2151 and the NX’ logs of encounters with more powerful adversaries further from home, Yorktown was fitted with only 3 Phase Cannons, one on the fore ventral saucer on E deck, one on the dorsal ‘neck’ on B deck, and one on the aft ventral secondary hull on G deck. This was increased to the current 8 cannon placements during refit due to Enterprise’ experiences. Areas on Yorktown that had cannons were upgraded to two cannons, and two cannons were added to the dorsal fore saucer. Yorktown also received its protective customization during this.

Phase Cannons are mounted on retractable turrets, and after NX-01’s experience with them, are tied directly into the Impulse Engines fusion reactors for greater power yields. Phase Cannons originally could not be fired at Warp, though this was overcome in 2152 and parameters distributed. At full power, which included the latest mark and both the increased yield (around 80%) and the controlled overload setup, the maximum yield of a Phase Cannon was roughly 650 megatons in ideal conditions.

Yorktown since inception has sported 3 torpedo tubes, the fore pair at the front of the saucer on F deck, using the half deck between F and G decks to only use one deck of height, the single aft launcher on G deck making use of the same concept. Originally, these fired Spatial Torpedoes, nuclear fusion missile weapons, though the 2152 refit upgraded the launchers to also accept Photonic Torpedoes, antimatter missile weapons, of which the ship received a rather modest amount as production was ramping. Most ships that docked were being upgraded to Photonic Torpedoes and their launchers around this time period. Each of Yorktown’s tubes has a separate internal bay with autoloading arm. The ventral Phase Cannons share Armory rooms with the ventral Torpedo Launchers.

Photonic Torpedoes have a variable yield, unlike Spatial Torpedoes, and are stored in powered magazine carts containing 4 stacked vertically. Moving these carts by guiding them across the corridor and attaching them to the autoloading arm station in the Armory is how torpedoes move from the storage bay and into the tube. Two of these carts could be attached back to back to each other as well, to give the autoloading arm two magazines to use for a launcher. Yorktown typically contains 24 powered magazine carts, giving a total of 96 Photonic Torpedoes. 8 magazine carts were used for each launcher. Being antimatter weapons, Photonic Torpedoes use the ship’s antimatter reserves for arming.

Spatial Torpedoes differed, stored on horizontal powered carts, and were often transported to the Armory via a feeding system in the storage room. Placing a Spatial Torpedo on the feeding system would move it to a magazine that was embedded in the Armory wall via the half deck space, where they would be obtainable by the autoloading arm, obtainable from this emplacement. This magazine could hold 5 Spatial Torpedoes. Each storage room for a launcher also typically had an additional 5, giving a total number of 30 Spatial Torpedoes. Torpedoes could be sent between the fore and aft launcher storage rooms as individual pieces using a powered transport sled located in the half deck space.

Defense

Starfleet not having the technology at the time for shields, Yorktown was originally protected only by Polarized Hull Plating utilizing Horonium alloy and robust armor layers, with a pair of Plasma Cannons for point defense. An artificially created substance, Horonium alloy was a metal that had undergone the removal of all fissile material, resulting in not liking to combine with anything else nor have anything else to be separated, granting more efficient and pure polarization across it. The Hull Polarization system ran energy through this material, making the armoring significantly harder and able to spread outside forces across this state of the hull more evenly. Polarized Hull Plating lattices could be ‘healed’ by running at low power.

In 2153, it was noted Polarized Hull Plating was incapable of blocking Transporter. Logs from Enterprise showed this to be worth patching, citing beaming out enemy ship components or people during combat. This vulnerability would be unsolved until 2156, when the polarization matrix was altered slightly so as to block out Transporters. This is when Yorktown would go in for a minor update and receive the Polarized Hull Plating improvement from 2154, among others, such as Pulsed Phase Cannon models, as many updatable aspects had piled. Of course, this made it so that a ship with its hull plating polarized could not use its own Transporter either. The Earth Romulan War would start this year, proving the timing of this upgrade as fortunate.

After the war was over, ships were able to safely be put in for deeper refits. With many now older Andorian, Tellar and Vulcan ships be folded into Starfleet’s defensive arm, and goodwill prospering, their technology became available. The Andorian Imperial Guard became the Andorian Guard, a Starfleet branch, and Thy’lek Shran made a Starfleet Chief of Staff, many Earth ships would gain Andorian technology. In Yorktown’s case, this was shields from a Sevaijen class light cruiser. These regenerate quickly compared to stronger Vulcan shields, Andorian designs favoring shields over hull, lacking Polarized Hull Plating.

Auxiliary Spacecraft

Shuttlepods

Yorktown sports two 7-person Shuttlepods in ready status, with two more in storage in the starboard Cargo bay. These pods were 6.9 meters long, 2.6 m wide with wings in and 2.1 m tall, with a weight of 2.8 metric tons.

In space, these Orbital Terrain Vehicles are capable of around 0.08c, though could be pressed to as high as 0.1c. In atmosphere, they are capable of cruising at Mach 2.5 and have a maximum speed of around Mach 40, above standard Earth escape velocity. The pods have a relatively tough hull with 2.5 centimeters of Ditanium outer layer armor and 2.5 centimeters of Horonium alloy backing of 2.5 additional centimeters of Ditanium, to enable a modest Polarized Hull Plating system that also acted to protect the pod at high speed in atmosphere. The pods were able to unfold a wing at each side for lift in atmosphere and had Reaction Control Systems for small maneuvering.

The pods did not have a navigational deflector, as they are not Warp capable, but their hulls were capable of deflecting bits of matter up to 5 centimeters across even with the Polarized Hull Plating inactive. The Shuttlepods sported four small Plasma Cannons as weapons, two fore, two aft, with a range of 10 kilometers, primarily for removing large debris, though also applicable as modest weapons. These could be fired in bolts or beams and had their own targeting array aboard. The pod’s scientific sensors were rather robust for a vessel its size.

Communications wise, the pod sported both a subspace communications array and a separate transponder emitting device to allow other ships to locate it, since it was not Warp capable. Power was supplied by two small fusion reactors in the engine compartment aft, which each also fueled two small Impulse Engines. The pods had batteries that charged off of these fusion reactors, allowing systems to function even with the reactors offline. With the pod’s air tanks and atmospheric recyclers, it could prove life support for a full compliment of 7 people for around 24 Earth days.

These Shuttlepods had ration packs in storage compartments and a limited Protein Resequencer with a fold-out stove for heating, The two benches for the aft four passengers could be used as beds. To exit and enter the vehicle, one could use the entry hatch door on the port side or the hatch at the top aft. In the top middle of the pod was the docking interface, which could be used as an entry hatch when docked, but had the primary purpose of being able to be magnetized. This allowed the pod to be manipulated with a telescoping loading arm attached to the ceiling of its Launch Bay. Lacking forcefields, each time the Launch Bay doors opened and closed, the Launch Bay would be depressurized then repressurized.

Life Boats and Inspector/Work Pods

Yorktown, like other Intrepid class starships, features Life Boats in case the vessel has to be abandoned. Containing 18 Life Boats, with 9 on each side near the fore diagonals of the saucer section on E deck, they are internally arranged in a set of 5 then a set of 4, going aft. These Life Boats were 4.4 meters long, 3.7 m wide, and 2.1 m tall, with a weight of 2.4 m tons.

Capable of holding four people each, this gives Yorktown’s Life Boats an evacuation limit of 72 people, this alone is nearly 20% higher than the crew’s standard compliment, even with MACOs. These Life Boats have a simple set of four Reaction Control System quad nozzles aft for movement, and are entered through an aft hatch. Released by an explosive bolt, they are dropped down out of the ventral side of the saucer. Maximum speed is just below Mach 6. Possessing basic sensors and computer systems to navigate with and for locating safety, they also have emergency transponders to more easily be found.

Powered by battery packs charged by the ship, like Shuttlepods, the Life Support power is separate. 10 days of engine use is typical, though the Crew inside can survive for around a month with the air and water recycling systems. In the wall is a small foldout stove for heating up ration packs. These units contain a second, small room near the back of the pod with ample storage and a lavatory. Seats in the main room can be reclined for rest and if reaching a planet, these Life Boats can deploy a parachute for landing and have transparent aluminum windows for visibility.

Important for outside repairs and view of the ship, each Inspection/Work Pod is stored in its own small bay on F deck, somewhat towards the outside of the Launch Bay, for a total of two. These small vehicles can carry a crew of 2 people and are 3.7 meters long, 2.3 m wide and 2.1 m tall, with a weight of 1.5 metric tons.

Only powered by batteries charged by the ship, these vehicles have their own bays and hatch for release and retrieval. A sled the vehicle rests on in its bay extends from the hatch for the vehicle to detach and attach to. Capable of only 100 kph, these pods can extend arms with hardware tools to help facilitate repairs in space on the mothership’s hull. These vehicles are simple and designed for work, they have only enough power for roughly an Earth day of activity, and possess little Life Support beyond air tanks that refill when docking.

Roleplaying Information

The one week disappearance was Daniels sending Yorktown to help the war torn and full of time meddling Star Trek Online era. With select hardware enhanced by Temporal Agents, Yorktown is roughly comparable to a Saber class in size, speed, sensors and combat, though retains its 22c nature.
